When is it time to RESET your business?

I’m exhausted.

There is a dark cloud in the air. A feeling of “blah”, a feeling of disappointment, of “what-could-have-beens” - as if my business has been treading water for months, if not years.

Does this sound familiar?

Sure it’s been “good enough”.
Sure it’s “made some money”.
Sure it’s “paid the bills”… but something is missing.

It’s a combination of purpose, goals and growth. What happened to them? Certainly when I started building a business those were in place… right?

Yes.

And actually, now that I think about it, the goals at the outset were so much simpler. Get good, make some money, and pay bills… and those things happened without much fanfare.

They came. They went. They were achieved.

But there was no celebration, there was no grand conclusion - they were just things that happened over time and with a lot of hard work.

The problem, is that over time, those simple goals are not enough to sustain most people. This has caused me to realize that this feeling of sloth and disappointment has more to do with the fact that I’m not aiming at anything - I’m just existing. Treading water.

My skill and my income have all leveled out and stalled as a result of this stagnation.

“Good enough” isn’t “good enough”, anymore.

So is it time to completely reset my business?

This is a question that we all must ask ourselves when we realize that we are in this situation, and unfortunately, while there is most likely a simple solution, it won’t necessarily be easy to implement...

Get started anyway with this thought exercise:

  1. Ask yourself: am I still interested in my field? Is it exciting or have I lost interest?

  2. Ask yourself: do I desire additional income, or something more? A profound purpose?

  3. Ask yourself: are others reliant on my existing business? Family, employees, partners - or am I flying solo?

Over the next several days we’ll explore each of these questions in depth (let’s move ahead to Question #1). I’ll be answering them myself, and I’d like to hear from you as well.

🍻  Cheers, - AJ
